Queer Havens
Omschrijving:
Pride Photo is proud to co-curate Queer Havens, a new exhibition opening this summer in Amsterdam. In collaboration with World Press Photo, this project explores what safety means for LGBTQIA+ communities across different cultures and contexts today.
Since the 1970s, queer communities around the world have created spaces—both tangible and emotional—where people can express themselves freely, connect with others, and find belonging. These “safe spaces” continue to be vital in the face of ongoing discrimination, exclusion, and violence. Queer Havens brings together twelve photographic projects—six from Pride Photo and six from the World Press Photo archive—that document and celebrate these spaces in all their complexity.
The works span chosen families, community gatherings, moments of transition, intimate relationships, and acts of remembrance and resistance. Together, they offer deeply personal and diverse perspectives on how LGBTQIA+ individuals imagine, construct, and sustain safety in their lives.
The exhibition will be presented from 12 July to 10 August 2025, both outdoors in Amsterdam’s Westerpark and indoors at Het Meterhuisje, during the Amsterdam Pride season. Admission is free, and a public program will accompany the opening. The full exhibition will also be available online via worldpressphoto.org, ensuring broader access to these important stories.
As an organization committed to amplifying LGBTQIA+ voices through photography, Pride Photo is honored to contribute to this timely and necessary reflection on queer resilience, visibility, and solidarity.
Queer Havens is part of World Press Photo’s 70th anniversary program and is made possible with the support of Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst, Cultuurfonds, and Stadsdeel West.
